Design Brief
To identify unconventional outcomes to enhance the way in which people interact with sanitary wares and fixtures through identifying a problem and addressing the issues.
Accessible Diapering Sink
A sink equipped with a properly arranged diapering area for parents facing difficulties when changing diapers.
which allows for enhanced safety, hygiene and accessibility to facilities which could aid the diapering experience better.
The Issues
Lack of Facilities
According to a study,
1880 restrooms, only 40 had diaper changing stations.
68 dining establishments, only 9 had diaper changing stations.
Changing stations only available in female washrooms.
Lack of Hygiene
If there is no diaper changing station, parents can only resort to changing the diaper on the floor of the public restroom.
Lack of Accesibility
Most diaper changing stations are located hanging on the wall and
is usually far away from the sinks and parents have to support their child with one hand and use the other hand to help them wash.
Lack of Safety
According to a research, 86% of caregivers move or look away from children and 58% of them only did so for 1 to 3 seconds
“When I was washing my hands, my child stood up on the diaper changing table and fell from it. After being diagnosed as skull fracture and acute extradural hematoma, he stayed hospital for 5 days.”
- Parent of boy, 1 year 8 months old.
Problem
"Parents find it difficult to change their toddler's diapers in public toilets."
Principle of F1 Cars
F1 cars have a very tight space inside to prevent the driver from swerving about inside the vehicle as a form of safety measure due to the sharp turns they need to make.
While Changing Diapers
Children will not be able to move as much due to space constraints which allows parents to change diapers comfortably. The V-Shape profile of the sink follows the principle of form follows function; the child is able to lie down within without the sink taking up a large amount of space in the environment.
After Changing Diapers
Parents will be able to wash their hands after changing their child's diapers while keeping a close lookout on them. Likewise, children can also wash their feet or hands with the sink conveniently placed near within their reach.
